The Registered Behavior TechnicianTM (RBT®) is a paraprofessional certification in behaviour analysis obtained through the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB). Upon completion and/or passing the exam, RBTs assist in the delivery of behaviour analytic services and practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and/or Coordinator, who are responsible for all the work an RBT performs.

The RBT requirements are as follows:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Possess a minimum of a high school diploma or national equivalent (WAEC, OND, HND, etc.)
  3. Complete 40 hours of training
  4. Complete a criminal or police background check
  5. Pass the RBT examination
  6. Renew his or her status yearly by completing a competency assessment

The Applied Behavior Analysis Technician (ABAT) is a paraprofessional certification in behaviour analysis obtained through the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA). The ABAT serves as a direct one-to-one instructor under the supervision of a QASP-S, QBA, and/or BCBA or other master’s level or above licensed or credentialed professional. The ABAT requirements are as follows:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old
  2. Possess a minimum of a high school diploma or national equivalent (WAEC, OND, HND, etc.)
  3. Complete 40 hours assessment-based ABA training within 5-years
  4. Obtain 15 hours of supervised fieldwork
  5. Obtain recommendation from your supervisor
  6. Complete a criminal or security/police background check
  7. Pass the ABAT examination
  8. Renew his or her status every two years
  9. Maintain the required continuous education units (12 CEUs)
  10. Fee: N95,000 or $100

The QASP-S is a mid-tier professional who serves as an experienced instructor and may also provide training to staff/families, monitor the progress of goals and objectives, and provide supervision to ABATs. The credential is obtained through the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA). The QASP-S is supervised by a QBA or other master’s level or above licensed or credentialed professional. The QASP-S requirements are as follows:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old
  2. Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND)
  3. Complete 180 hours assessment-based ABA training programme
  4. Obtain 1000 hours of supervised fieldwork
  5. Obtain recommendation from your supervisor
  6. Complete a criminal or security/police background check
  7. Pass the QASP-S examination
  8. Agree to the Code of Ethics
  9. Meet the final review of all eligibility criteria by the QABA Board Committee before formal credentialing
  10. Complete an 8-hour Supervisory coursework
  11. Renew his or her status every 2 years
  12. Maintain the required continuous education units (20 CEUs)

The QBA is certified at the Masters degree level and has advanced knowledge of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) and training and experience with individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). QBAs provide program planning, assessment, data analysis and direct-care oversight for all aspects of behaviour intervention programs. Additionally, QBAs supervise the ABAT (behaviour technicians), mid-tier supervisors (QASP-S), and collaborative care providers. The credential is obtained through the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA). The QBA requirements are as follows:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old
  2. Possess a minimum of a Master’s Degree in a related field, i.e. ABA, education, special education, psychology, social work, or other related health professions
  3. Must have completed 270 hours of approved ABA, ethics, autism coursework
  4. Complete 1500 hours of supervised fieldwork with a minimum of 750 hours in an oversight or supervisory role (conducting/analysing assessment, developing treatment plans, training staff or parents, etc.)
  5. Obtain recommendation from your supervisor
  6. Complete a criminal or security/police background check
  7. Pass the QBA examination
  8. Agree to the Code of Ethics
  9. Meet the final review of all eligibility criteria by the QABA Board Committee before formal credentialing
  10. Renew his or her status every 2 years
  11. Maintain the required continuous education units (32 CEUs)
